Karina addresses political symbolism rumors during YouTube appearance, clarifies her intent and reflects on recent backlash
Karina of group aespa has officially apologized following a controversy involving a red jacket with the number “2” printed on it — a detail some interpreted as a reference to a political party in South Korea.
On June 6, Karina appeared on the YouTube channel Fairy Jaehyung in an interview titled “She’s finally here. The youngest guest, Karina..!” There, she directly addressed the backlash over the red jacket photo she posted on her social media, saying, “There was absolutely no political intent. I’m very sorry for worrying my fans and so many people.”
She explained that the jacket was a last-minute purchase. “I went out with staff and bought something warm because it was cold. I uploaded the photo to interact with fans, but deleted it after receiving messages about its meaning. I realize now I was too unaware. Even if I’m overseas, I should have been more mindful.”
Karina added, “I have two dreams. The first is to live peacefully. I hope not only myself but also everyone around me can stay safe and healthy. The second is to live a long life as Yoo Jimin. Being Karina is great, but I also want to enjoy a full life as my real self. If Karina is my alter ego, I want to make Yoo Jimin stronger and happier.”
The incident began in May, when Karina posted a photo wearing a red jacket with the number “2.” This prompted speculation that she was showing support for a political candidate in Korea’s general election. SM Entertainment swiftly addressed the issue at the time, stating, “There was no political intention whatsoever,” and removed the post.
