BDU Jay Chang and his ‘BOYS PLANET’ talks
Q: I think “Boys Planet” would have been a bit burdensome since it’s your second survival audition program.
▶ I didn’t think about that at all. I thought I could show you what I couldn’t show you on “Under Nineteen.”
Q: There are more foreign participants in ‘Boys Planet’ than ‘Under Nineteen’, so communication must have been easier for you.
▶ It was more comfortable than “Under Nineteen” because there were so many people who could speak English. My Korean is not perfect, but I was able to speak Korean, too. In particular, Brian, Na Kamden, and Seok Matthew are from North America, so we are close. We keep in touch even after the debut.
Q: At the time, you were ranked 10th, unfortunately, you couldn’t join ZEROBASEONE. Your goal is becoming a K-pop idol, but it must have been hard because that dream was frustrated in front of you.
▶I was disappointed at first. I was upset, but after thinking about it a little bit, it was a great result to be ranked 10th out of 98 people. There will be more important opportunities coming up, so I wanted to work harder from now on.
Q: After releasing a solo song, you became a member of the idol group One Pact. In a way, it’s been 6 years since you came to Korea, and I’m curious how you felt then.
▶I wanted to get this opportunity for a long time, but it was an honor to finally debut as the main vocalist of an idol group, and I was excited to perform with great performances. I’m still so happy.
Q: Are you communicating well with ONE PACT members?
▶Tag speaks English, so I can communicate well. Other members are also close because I’ve known them since “Boys Planet.”
Q: Even after debuting as an official group, you participated in a vocal survival audition show “Build Up” this year. Even Koreans who don’t have difficulty communicating feel hard on continuously trying survival audition programs, it might be harder for foreigners. What’s the driving force behind these challenges?
▶ Actually, after “Boys Planet” ended, I had no intention of going on an audition program again. But when I heard the concept of this program (BUILD UP), I was amazed by the fact that it was a vocal survival show. I sang a lot on “Boys Planet,” but I thought I could show my vocal skills that I haven’t shown yet on “Build Up,” so I went out again. I was 110 percent satisfied with what I did. Especially when my favorite idol, Kim Jae Hwan, said, “I want to change Jaehwan to Jay hwan,” I was very proud of myself.
Q: There are a lot of comments that your pronunciation improved a lot on “Build Up” compared to when you appeared on “Boys Planet.”
▶I’ve heard that a lot. That’s a relief. (Smile) Actually, everyone knows I am a foreigner when I talk, but I keep listening to songs and practice and think about how to pronounce them, so it seems working in singing. I feel proud.
Q: You debuted as a B.D.U member, and you’re promoting with ONE FACT. I’m curious about your future resolution.
▶ I’m so happy to be able to do various things and experience a lot. It’s nice to be able to sing in Korea like this. I’ll try to show you the best Jay Chang in the future.
So ONE PACT and BDU Jay Chang will continue his journey.
