BLACKPINK Rosé Leaves KOMCA After 22 Years Since Seo Taiji

BLACKPINK Rosé has officially withdrawn from the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), becoming the first major artist to do so since Seo Taiji in 2002. This significant decision was finalized on January 31, 2025, after a three-month grace period following her application for termination submitted on October 31, 2024.

Reasons Behind Rosé’s Departure from KOMCA

The primary reason for Rosé’s departure is believed to be related to double commission fees. In September 2024, she signed an exclusive contract with Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, which emphasizes her focus on international activities. Managing copyrights in both South Korea and the United States was deemed unnecessary. As a result, all of Rosé’s music copyrights will now be managed by her U.S.-based publisher under Atlantic Records.

Historical Context of KOMCA Withdrawals

Rosé’s exit marks a notable moment in the K-pop industry as it is the first time in 22 years that a prominent artist has left KOMCA. Seo Taiji was the first to terminate his trust relationship with the association back in 2002, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding copyright management practices within the organization. Rosé’s decision reflects a broader trend among global K-pop artists seeking more streamlined and effective ways to manage their intellectual property.

Recent Achievements and Solo Career

Despite her departure from KOMCA, Rosé continues to thrive in her solo career alongside her group activities. Her collaboration with Bruno Mars on the song “APT.” released in October 2024 became a global sensation, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and inspiring the viral “APT Challenge.” Additionally, her debut solo album “rosie” achieved remarkable success, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart—the highest ranking for a K-pop female artist.

Upcoming BLACKPINK World Tour

Rosé remains an integral part of BLACKPINK as they prepare for their highly anticipated world tour. The group is set to kick off their tour on July 5-6, 2025, at Goyang Stadium in South Korea. The tour will cover ten major cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, London, and Tokyo.
