BTS Jungkook Make Tokyo Great Again Hat Controversy; Brand Denies Political Intent
BTS member Jungkook has issued an apology after being seen wearing a hat with a politically sensitive message. The Japanese fashion brand that produced the item has also released a statement addressing the backlash.

Brand Responds: “No Political Intention Behind the Design”
On June 14, the Japanese fashion brand responsible for the hat issued an apology via its official social media. The statement read, “We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable,” while adding, “We believe in the freedom to express ideas through fashion.”
The brand clarified that the design was not meant to convey any political stance. “This design symbolically expresses our hope for the prosperity of Tokyo’s fashion scene. It was never intended as a political message,” they explained.
The controversy began after Jungkook attended J-Hope’s solo concert as a guest on June 12 at the Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province. During the rehearsal, he was spotted wearing a hat that read “MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN.”
The phrase, a twist on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again,” has reportedly been adopted by some Japanese right-wing politicians. This connection sparked concern among netizens, who criticized the unintended political implications of the hat.

Jungkook Issues a Formal Apology and Disposes of the Hat
In response, Jungkook released a personal apology. “It weighs heavily on my heart to be writing this after reuniting with you all after such a long time,” he began. “I sincerely apologize for the disappointment and discomfort caused by the phrase on the hat I wore during today’s rehearsal.”
He admitted that he had failed to recognize the historical and political context behind the slogan. “I deeply regret that my lack of awareness caused disappointment and pain,” he continued. “I am truly sorry. Regardless of the reason, there is no excuse.”
Jungkook concluded his statement by confirming that the hat had been immediately discarded.
