Court Dismisses NewJeans’ Appeal Against Solo Activity Ban on 17th
NewJeans’ attempt to lift a court-imposed ban on independent activities has been rejected by a higher court, marking another legal setback for the girl group amid ongoing conflict with their label. Meanwhile, the group continues to see global success, with one of their tracks surpassing 400 million streams on Spotify.
Seoul High Court (Court of Appeals) Upholds Injunction Restricting Independent Promotions
On June 17, the Seoul High Court’s Civil Division 25-2 (Presiding Judges Hwang Byung-ha, Jung Jong-gwan, and Lee Kyun-yong) dismissed an appeal filed by the five members of NewJeans against the injunction banning them from independent activities.
This follows an earlier decision from the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Division 50 in April, which had rejected their initial objection to the injunction. At the time, the court stated that after reviewing the group’s repeated claims and supporting materials, there was no reason to overturn the prior decision. The injunction, originally issued in March, was requested by HYBE’s sublabel ADOR and prohibits NewJeans from signing advertising contracts or engaging in solo promotions without agency approval.
The court maintained that the previous ruling was valid, leaving the ban on individual activities in place despite the group’s challenge.
“New Jeans” Hits 400 Million Streams on Spotify
While the legal battle continues, NewJeans’ streaming performance remains strong. On the same day as the court decision, ADOR announced that “New Jeans,” a track from the group’s 2023 mini-album Get Up, had surpassed 400 million cumulative streams on Spotify as of June 15. This marks the sixth NewJeans track to exceed the 400M mark.
“New Jeans” is known for its genre-blending structure, shifting between UK garage and Jersey club beats. Its clever use of the group’s name in the lyrics, along with its trendy melody, helped the song gain viral popularity. The music video also attracted attention for its collaboration with the iconic U.S. animated series The Powerpuff Girls.
To date, NewJeans has released 15 tracks with over 100 million Spotify streams, including the mega-hit “OMG,” which has surpassed 800 million plays. The group’s total cumulative Spotify streams now exceed 6.3 billion, underscoring their consistent global appeal despite internal disputes.
