Former EXO Kris Wu Rumored Dead in Prison Amid 13-Year Sentence for Sexual Assault — Chinese Authorities Silent
Rumors are rapidly spreading across Chinese social media claiming that Kris Wu, a former member of EXO currently serving a 13-year prison sentence for sexual assault, has died in prison. He is 35 years old.
Taiwanese outlet Mirror Media reported on November 13 that speculation about Wu’s death has been circulating online in mainland China. According to the report, a man claiming to be Wu’s fellow inmate alleged that “he heard from prison guards that Kris Wu had suddenly died” and that “rumors suggest he was killed by local gang members.”
This is not the first time death rumors about Kris Wu have surfaced. Back in March, when the Canadian governmentcondemned China for executing four Canadian nationals on drug trafficking charges, speculation arose that one of them might have been Wu, who holds Canadian citizenship. However, Wu has never faced drug-related charges, making it highly unlikely that he was among the individuals mentioned.
Other unverified claims — such as Wu allegedly dying after a prolonged hunger strike — have also been circulating, but none have been substantiated.
Kris Wu debuted as a member of EXO in 2012 and left the group in 2014 after filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his exclusive contract. He returned to China, pursuing a solo career as a singer and actor. In 2021, 24 alleged victims — including a former girl group member — accused Wu of sexual assault, leading to his conviction and 13-year prison sentence. He is expected to be deported to Canada after completing his sentence.
As of now, Chinese authorities have issued no official statement regarding Wu’s condition. State-run outlets have only reiterated warnings that “spreading unverified rumors online may result in legal consequences.”
