interview with SUHO about 3rd mini album “Dotted Line (1 to 3)”
Q. How does it feel to make a comeback with the 3rd mini album ‘Dotted Line (1 to 3)’?
- I’ve been preparing for this album for a year and a half, but now I’m showing it to you through drama filming and various schedules. That’s how I can continue to refine and improve my music and concept, so I think I can show you a more complete album.
Q. What is the title track, ‘Dotted Line (1 to 3)’, and what is the point to listen to?
- It is a British rock genre song with a disco-style funky guitar and bass riff, and it is a song that goes beyond the first and second dimensions and in the third dimension, that is, for Suho, it is a song that looks back on himself in his 30s beyond his 10s and 20s and informs listeners about his future direction. The theme is profound, but unlike the title song so far, there are many exciting and addictive music sources, so I think it would be better to enjoy it together when singing it at a festival.
- In addition, this album has a story line that “an astronaut who has become lost in space looks back on himself and sends his life philosophy as a music signal to an unknown area,” so it will be fun to listen to the song while understanding it better if you listen to it in order from track 1 to track 7.
Q. Is there a reason why you pre-released another double title track, “Cheese”? which Red Velvet’s Wendy featured in it. How was your chemistry?
- First of all, I really liked the song “Cheese,” so I wanted to enjoy it with my fans at my solo concert. Also, I wanted to make a big image transformation through this album so that I could approach my fans more fun and comfortably, so I thought I should release a light and bouncy “Cheese” first.
- Wendy is one of my favorite junior artist, and while working on this song, I thought she would match the song really well. I was worried that Wendy might not be able to do it as she could be busy, but thankfully she accepted to feature in 10 minutes after asking.
Q. As it’s a double title track, you filmed two music videos. Please tell us a memorable episode while filming.
- In the music video for “Cheese”, Wendy’s facial expressions were really fun like an American sitcom drama, so I laughed a lot throughout the filming. There is a scene where people pretend to be hardened at the last scene of the music video and then laugh when they nod at each other. In fact, even though it was a NG scene, it was included in the music video, so it looks more pleasant.
Q. The whole album is filled with rock music. I heard you learned how to play the guitar for this album. What did you pay most attention to while preparing it?
- I started studying rock during my military service. As a frontman in the band, I wanted to express myself that “Suho is serious about rock” while holding a guitar.
Q. If you have any other songs in this album other than the double title songs, please tell me why.
- I’d like to recommend the 7th track, “Zero Gravity.” It’s a song that we worked on while thinking about the happy feelings that EXO and EXO-L feel when they meet together, so it’s our favorite song in the album.
Q. If you were to express this album in one keyword, how could you express it? Why?
- “Suho’s Genre.” It is the last stage of the project that I have prepared since 2020 to build Suho’s own genre. I had to do a solo concert tour with mini albums 1, 2, and 3, so I needed to broaden the music spectrum and build up the music. I think I have built “Suho’s Genre” by this album, and we have created a possibility that will not be awkward even if we include various rock-style music in the album.
Q. You also held your first solo concert prior to the release of the album, what did you pay special attention to?
- I wanted to give the fans the feeling of being at a rock concert, and since the title is “SU:HOME,” I wanted the fans to enjoy it comfortably in the concert hall. I also wanted to bring various colors to the concert itself and make it enjoyable for the eyes and ears.
Q. What are your plans or goals for this album?
- I hope many people know that “SUHO is serious about rock.” It would be great if you think that “SUHO’s music is Suho-ish.”
Q. Please say something to the fans at home and abroad who waited for Suho’s comeback.
- You’ve waited for a long time! I’m excited and happy that my album came out that much better. I once said, “If you’re happy while waiting, it’s love.” Did you have fun while waiting for my album? Beep! It’s love! I love you so much, EXO-L. Starting with my concert in Korea, I’ll go wherever EXO-L is around the world. Please wait a little longer! Let’s love EXO-L!
