From G-IDLE to i-dle: A New Identity for a New Chapter
i-dle—formerly known as (G)I-DLE—has officially announced a rebranding, dropping both the “G” and the parentheses from their original name. The announcement coincides with the group’s seventh anniversary and their upcoming comeback with their 8th mini album, scheduled for release on May 19.
Moving Beyond the “G”
According to Cube Entertainment, the “G” initially stood for “girl,” representing the group’s identity as a girl group. Its removal signals a conscious departure from gender-based framing, allowing the group to pursue a broader conceptual and creative direction. The change reflects an intent to move beyond labels and toward something more open-ended and interpretive.
A Strategic Shift Before the Next Chapter
The rebrand comes just months after all five members—Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua—renewed their contracts with Cube Entertainment in December 2024. The timing suggests a strategic alignment with their upcoming release and positions this comeback as a starting point for a new era.
A New Visual Identity
The group’s new logo, styled as i-dle in all lowercase, is composed of points, lines, and planes. Five lowercase “i”s form a star, representing each member and their shared direction. The minimalist visual identity underscores the group’s intent to explore artistic flexibility while maintaining internal cohesion.
Other K-pop Groups That Have Rebranded
While rebranding is relatively rare in K-pop, several other groups have undergone notable name changes. BEAST re-debuted as Highlight after leaving their original agency. The New Six (TNX) was formerly known as P Nation’s boy group from an audition program, Loud. TO1 debuted as TOO under a different label. These changes often reflect shifts in management, legal disputes, or renewed artistic direction—similar in spirit, if not in exact context, to i-dle’s recent transition.

i-dle, More Than Just a New Name
Rather than adopting an entirely new identity, i-dle’s name change is more of a reset than a reinvention. It bridges past and future, maintaining brand continuity while opening space for new interpretations. The move suggests a desire for creative freedom, unbound by original definitions or pre-set expectations.
A Comeback That Reflects Evolution and Rebranding
As anticipation builds for their May 19 comeback, the rebrand marks more than just a visual update. It’s a narrative device—one that reflects i-dle’s evolution as artists and performers. With a fresh name and conceptual direction, the group seems ready to explore themes that reflect who they’ve become, and where they want to go next.
