NewJeans and NJZ, Trademark Application Deepens Conflict with ADOR

Surprise Trademark Filing

NewJeans members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein have reportedly filed for trademark rights for their new team name, NJZ, just one day before its public announcement. According to KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service), the members applied for trademark rights in 10 categories, including the NJZ logo, advertising, and merchandise sales.

ADOR’s Stance on Team Name

ADOR, the group’s agency, has emphasized that ‘NewJeans’ remains the official team name. In a statement, ADOR asserted that the exclusive contract between NewJeans members and the agency is legally valid, dismissing claims of its termination as one-sided. The agency has filed for an injunction and a lawsuit to confirm the validity of the exclusive contract.

Ongoing Dispute Over Social Media Accounts

Following the creation of official NJZ social media accounts by the members, ADOR reiterated that NewJeans has existing official accounts for fan communication. The agency stated that any new accounts were created without prior consultation, as required by the exclusive contract.

Upcoming Activities as NJZ

Despite the ongoing conflict, the five members are set to make their first appearance as NJZ at ‘ComplexCon Hong Kong’ starting on March 21. This move signals the group’s intention to proceed with activities under their new name, further intensifying the standoff with ADOR.
