NewJeans Faces Backlash for “Demonizing” K-pop Industry After Court Ruling, Martyr NJZ? interview on 22nd
NewJeans, the popular K-pop group now known as NJZ, has stirred controversy with their recent comments about the Korean entertainment industry following a court decision that restricted their independent activities. The group’s interview with TIME magazine has drawn criticism, particularly from lawyer Ko Sang-rok, for potentially demonizing the K-pop system.
NewJeans’ Bold Statements and Industry Critique
In their interview with TIME, NewJeans expressed disappointment with the court’s ruling and made provocative statements about the K-pop industry:
“Maybe this is just the current reality in Korea. But that’s exactly why we believe change and growth are necessary. It almost feels like Korea wants to turn us into revolutionaries,” the group stated.
They further criticized the industry’s treatment of artists, with member Hanni saying, “There’s just a very structural problem in K-pop in general, where companies don’t really view their artists as actual human beings and rather see them as products.”

Legal Expert’s Concerns Over NJZ’s Approach
Ko Sang-rok, a former lawyer from Kim & Chang and once a self-proclaimed “true fan” of NewJeans, expressed worry about the group’s recent statements. He cautioned that their approach could be seen as “demonizing” the industry and their former agency:
“If you take this attitude right after the court’s judgment comes out, it is difficult to avoid criticism that you are confronting the absurdity of the industry or the company in a way that lies, attacks other colleagues, and demonizes others,” Ko stated.
The lawyer emphasized the need for respect and gratitude towards the system that provided opportunities for the group, suggesting that their current stance might be detrimental to their future in the industry.
