NewJeans Files Immediate Appeal After Court Upholds Ban on Independent Activities
On April 16, the legal representatives of NewJeans (Minji, Danielle, Hanni, Haerin, Hyein) announced that they have filed an immediate appeal after the Seoul Central District Court rejected their objection to the injunction banning the group from engaging in independent activities outside their agency, ADOR.
Earlier that day, the court’s Civil Division 50 dismissed NewJeans’ objection to its previous decision, which had granted ADOR’s request to prohibit the members from signing advertising contracts or engaging in entertainment activities without the agency’s prior approval. The court reaffirmed that ADOR retains management rights over NewJeans under their exclusive contract, and that the group cannot pursue independent music or advertising activities without ADOR’s consent until the main lawsuit is resolved.
NewJeans’ law firm, Shin & Kim, stated, “The court upheld the original injunction decision today, so we have immediately filed an appeal. We will continue to participate faithfully in the legal process and do our utmost to ensure the facts are clearly established.”
The dispute began after NewJeans notified ADOR of contract termination in November 2024, citing a breakdown of trust and alleged breaches of duty by the agency. The court, however, found insufficient evidence that ADOR had fundamentally violated the contract or irreparably damaged the trust required for the exclusive agreement. As a result, NewJeans must continue all music and advertising activities strictly under ADOR’s management until further notice.
With the immediate appeal, the case now moves to the Seoul High Court, where the legal battle between NewJeans and ADOR will continue in the second instance.
Meanwhile, the 16th, the day NewJeans’ objection was dismissed, also marked the group’s 1000th day since debut, and fans sent their congratulations and support. The NewJeans members posted thank you letter on their instagram.
