NewJeans Minji Writes Open Letter Amid 47-Day Hiatus: “I’m Not Stopping—We’re Deepening”
On May 7, NewJeans Minji shared a heartfelt letter with fans via the group’s social media, marking her birthday and offering an honest look into her thoughts during the group’s current hiatus. The message came 47 days after NewJeans declared a temporary suspension of activities during a March 23 appearance at Hong Kong’s ComplexCon event.
In her message, Minji admitted that although many fans may think the group has stopped, she believes they are only growing deeper through the pause.
“Maybe it looks like we’ve stopped—but we haven’t”
Minji began by acknowledging the passing of time and her own feelings of emotional clutter. “It’s already May, and somehow it’s my birthday again,” she wrote. “There’s so much I want to say, but my head is a bit of a mess, so it’s hard to organize it all.”
Still, she expressed a clear desire: “I just want myself, my members, and Bunnies [NewJeans’ fans] to be happy. That might sound simple, but it’s my biggest goal in life.”
Referring to her decision to chase her dreams, she added, “I know running toward happiness—my own happiness—might look naive or foolish to some. But I still want today and tomorrow to be joyful. Not just for me, but for Bunnies too.”
She reflected on the importance of the present: “Isn’t it too harsh to give up today’s happiness for a future that may or may not come?”
“I miss the stage, but I’m looking forward to what’s next”
Minji admitted she misses the emotional connection with fans through music, but emphasized that she’s looking ahead. “I miss the moments where we shared emotions through good music. But I’m always more excited about what’s next. Even if it looks like we’ve stopped—we haven’t.”
“I truly believe we’re growing deeper,” she wrote. “I hope every day we’ve spent with Bunnies and every tomorrow ahead will be full of happiness.”
She closed by saying that the passage of time has made their connection with fans all the more precious. “Because our time together is limited, each moment feels even more meaningful.”
Legal battle continues behind the scenes
Minji’s message comes amid ongoing legal disputes between NewJeans’ agency ADOR and its Newjeans members. In March, a Seoul court granted ADOR’s injunction to block the members from signing advertising or entertainment deals independently. Though the group appealed, their motion was denied, effectively suspending all activities conducted under their self-created label “NJZ.”
Since then, the group has shut down their NJZ social accounts and replaced them with a neutral name, MHDHH, representing the initials of the five members. The move signaled a shift to a quieter phase, but as Minji’s message indicates, the members are far from giving up.
