Kim Jongchul talks about privilege on BTS Suga?
The head of the Military Manpower Administration expressed his position on the fact that BTS Suga, a member who caused a drunk driving scandal while serving in the military, was not disciplined.
Kim Jong-chul, the head of the Military Manpower Administration, attended the National Defense Commission’s parliamentary audit today (11th).
In August, BTS member Suga, who is serving in the military as a social service worker, was caught by the police for driving under the influence of an electric scooter during off-duty hours. On this day, Commissioner Kim said, “I don’t think it’s reasonable. We are educating and edifying.”
Unlike social service workers, active duty soldiers are also subject to disciplinary action for drunk driving committed during off-hours or while on vacation. “This is because it is stipulated by the (military service) law,” Commissioner Kim said. “Although (active soldiers) may feel disadvantaged, I think there are also issues related to the application of the law in terms of social service personnel.”
Earlier, in August, BTS member Suga was caught by police while returning home on an electric scooter after drinking in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. At that time, Suga’s blood alcohol level was 0.227%, well above the level of license cancellation (0.08%).
Later on the 30th of last month, Judge Lee Yoo-seop of the Seoul Western District Court issued a summary order of 15 million won to Suga, who was summarily indicted on charges of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act on the 27th. Abbreviated prosecution is a procedure in which the prosecution asks the court to issue a summary order such as fines without handing it over to a formal trial, and the summary order was confirmed because the parties and the court did not express their intention to go to trial.
Meanwhile, Suga entered the training center on Sept. 22 last year and is currently serving as a substitute for social service personnel. He is scheduled to be discharged from the military on June 22 next year.
