No one Imagined 5M copies!
Seventeen, the boy group debuted on May 26, 2015, has made a new record, according to Pledis, their agency. In Korea, people counts the first week sales of physical album. The group, Seventeen breaks the record, by selling 5M copies in a week. ‘Seventeenth Heaven,‘ the group’s 11th EP, sold 5,090,000 units in the first seven days of its release, Pledis Entertainment said. They were citing data from Hanteo Chart, a leading local tracker of physical album sales. Seventeen breaks the record, and it became the first K-pop album to sell over 5 million copies in its debut week.
The previous record was made by Stray Kids ‘5-Star’ which sold 4.62 millions. It was the record that surpassed the record of SVT ‘FML’. SVT’s ‘FML’ sold 4.55 millions in a week and was the top when it was released. It was broke by Stray Kids in 6 months, and SVT took lead again. Seventeen became the only K-pop group to sell more than 3 million copies of an album on the first day of its release, too according to the agency.
Why the First Week Sales?
First-week sales are considered as an important measure for an artist’s popularity and the size of their fandom. It is because, they do not have a chance to see the quality of album in first week. No songs released, no stages. The first week sales are mostly made by pre-order sales. In that season, the K-POP groups mostly only release the mock-up image of the album. Mostly pre-order sales are for a month, and the concept photos and trailers are dropped in the latest week. Nothing is out, but only the name value is waiting of the consumers for 3 weeks. So basically the album sales is on the impact of the last album. It is the measure of how much they grew from the last album.
That is the reason why idols and fandoms are sensitive in the first week sales. SVT, the group in their 9th year is still growing.
