SHINee Reunion Delayed: Fan Debates and Challenges Amid SM Concert Absence

The much-anticipated SHINee reunion at SM Entertainment’s 30th-anniversary concert, SMTOWN LIVE 2025, did not materialize, sparking heated debates among fans. Held on January 11 and 12 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, the concert featured numerous SM artists, but only Minho and Key represented SHINee. Onew and Taemin, who left SM Entertainment in 2024 for new agencies Griffin Entertainment and Big Planet Made respectively, were notably absent.

Speculations Around SHINee’s Absence

Fans have speculated about the reasons behind Onew and Taemin’s absence. Onew recently released his fourth mini-album CONNECTION on January 6, while Taemin is currently on his Ephemeral Gaze world tour. Despite this, fans noted that Taemin had no scheduled events between his Macau concert on January 4 and his Mexico concert on January 28, leading to questions about his non-participation. While Onew appeared in SM’s 30th-anniversary content, Taemin was completely absent.

Agency Responses to Criticism

Initially, criticism was directed at Onew for allegedly prioritizing solo activities over group commitments. In response, Griffin Entertainment’s CEO took to social media to deny these claims, stating that repeated cancellations were not their fault and emphasizing that there were no issues with SM Entertainment. This shifted fan scrutiny to Taemin’s agency, Big Planet Made.

On January 15, Big Planet Made released a statement addressing the rumors. The agency reaffirmed its support for Taemin’s SHINee activities and announced plans to take legal action against false claims circulating online. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that Taemin receives “fair treatment” as an artist, a phrase that reignited debates among fans about where responsibility lies for SHINee’s inability to perform as a full group.

Divided Opinions Among Fans

The phrase “fair treatment” in Big Planet Made’s statement sparked further fan discussions. Some argued that focusing on blame detracts from the group’s potential reunion. Others expressed frustration over logistical challenges preventing SHINee from appearing as a united group.

SHINee Members’ Commitment to a SHINee Reunion

Despite these challenges, all four members have expressed their dedication to SHINee as a group. During the concert, Key and Minho promised fans that they would return as a full group in the future. On January 13, Taemin reassured fans via a communication platform, stating, “I have so many stories I want to write with SHINee.” Similarly, Onew has spoken about the value of full-group activities in recent interviews.

Challenges of Group Activities Post-SM Departure

SHINee members’ situation reflects broader challenges faced by K-pop groups when members leave their original agency. While some groups successfully navigate “separate yet together” strategies, others face difficulties reconciling differing schedules and priorities across agencies.

Fans remain hopeful for a future SHINee reunion as the members continue to express their commitment to the group. While logistical hurdles persist, the belief in SHINee’s eventual return as a united team keeps fans optimistic about what lies ahead for the iconic K-pop group.
