tripleS Member Xinyu Sparks Controversy Over ‘One China’ Comment and Response to Fans
Xinyu, a member of the K-pop girl group tripleS, is facing ongoing backlash after voicing support for the “One China” principle during a fan interaction.
During a recent conversation on the fan communication platform Fromm, Xinyu stated, “Macau was originally Chinese land,” and added, “The same goes for Hong Kong and Taiwan.”
Her comments align with the One China policy, which claims that Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are all inseparable parts of China and that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the country.
When some fans expressed concern and cautioned her about the political sensitivity of her statement, Xinyu replied, “Are you saying this because I’ll get scolded?” She continued, “Did I say something wrong? If you disagree, you don’t have to subscribe to my Fromm.”
Her remarks have since gone viral on online communities, stirring heated debate for several days. While many Korean fans have criticized her comments, they’ve also pointed out her dismissive tone—particularly her suggestion that those who disagree should stop following her.
The controversy has intensified due to the multinational nature of tripleS. The group consists of 24 members, including 17 South Koreans, 4 Japanese members, one with dual Taiwanese and Vietnamese nationality, one Chinese member (Xinyu), and one Thai member. The presence of a member with Taiwanese heritage has further amplified criticism.
Xinyu first appeared in the 2021 Mnet survival show Girls Planet 999 and has been active as a member of tripleS since 2023.
