TWS HANJIN Wins U.S. Court Approval to Obtain Identity of User Who Posted 2,000 Harassing Messages
TWS member HANJIN has secured a key legal victory in the United States, gaining court approval to obtain the identity of an anonymous social media user who posted more than 2,000 malicious messages targeting him.
According to Seoul Wire on November 27, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted a discovery application submitted by HYBE, its subsidiary Pledis Entertainment, and HANJIN. The ruling provides a legal basis for HYBE to receive user information tied to two X (formerly Twitter) accounts and one YouTube account, all of which allegedly posted abusive content about the Chinese member.
Attorney Kim Jin-wook of Shinwon Law Firm, representing HANJIN, previously revealed that the anonymous user had uploaded over 2,000 posts and videos since early this year. The content reportedly included false rumors, defamatory statements, and discriminatory remarks targeting HANJIN’s race and nationality.
To initiate legal proceedings in Korea, HANJIN’s team filed the U.S. discovery request under 28 U.S.C. § 1782, a federal statute that allows parties involved in foreign legal actions to obtain evidence located within the United States.
With the court’s approval now secured, HYBE is expected to move forward with identifying the individual behind the accounts and pursue legal action accordingly.
