5th gen idols names are getting longer
New idol from FNC entertainment is ‘AMPERS&ONE’. The girl group waiting to debut from YG entertainment is ‘BABY MONSTER’. The 5th generation idols working right now are, ZEROBASEONE, BOYNEXTDOOR and Kiss of Life.
AMPERS&ONE
It is a combination of Ampersand, the symbol ‘&’ representing ‘and’, and ‘ONE’, which means you, me, and us all are one. It means that one and one come together to achieve the dreams and become one.
BOYNEXTDOOR
HYBE’s new boy group is ‘Boy Next Door’. Like the meaning of “the boys next door,” it is a team name that means to approach without decorating and comfortable. In fact, it is a phrase used to refer to a person with a friendly image like a “child next door”
KISS OF LIFE
The team’s name was derived from the word meaning ‘ventilation’ or ‘vitalization’, and expressed its ambition to breathe new breath into the music industry with the members’ music and charm.
ZEROBASEONE
ZEROBASEONE means a ‘brilliant start’ for the nine boys who become one which born from zero. It also includes a pledge to be with fans on its free journey that will walk from 0 to 1. While the team names born through the Mnet Idol audition program series were I.O.I., Wanna One, IZ*ONE, X1, and Kep1er, ZEROBASEONE is the longest name ever.
Why it is becoming longer?
So every 5th gen idols names are having nice meaning, it is questionable. Why did the names got longer? Until now, idol groups’ team names have been dominated by two to four letters in Korean. Especially in the case of girl groups, the trend was easily seen. In the case of girl groups from 2nd to 3rd generations, there were many four characters: Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation, Girls’ Day, Miss A, Rainbow, 2NE1, Apink, f(x), Red Velvet, Lovelyz, Oh My Girl, GFriend, April, TWICE, and WJSN are all 4 letters in Korean. After them, the 4th generation girl group has three-letter names: aespa, IVE, New Jeans, NMixx, Kep1er, and more. This short team names are one of the strategies to impress the public more easily.
However, as the 5 generation comes, the names are getting longer in Korean and in English both. According to insider of the industry says, it is now getting harder to find good short names. Too many idols were born and vanished, so it is hard to make name with the meaning is attractive and the pronunciation is comfortable. In order to avoid similar names, they have to use long names that combine several words however they try to compensate for the shortcomings of long names by setting an abbreviation.
