While YouTuber Sojang who spread malicious rumors about girl group IVE Jang Wonyoung, and others, was put on trial, Jang Wonyoung’s agency Starship Entertainment (hereinafter Starship) expressed its expectation for a court ruling in the future.
The Court Trial Details about YouTuber Sojang
On the 14th, the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office’s Criminal Division 1 (Chief Prosecutor Lee Gon-ho) indicted YouTuber Sojang (hereinafter YouTuber A) without detention on charges of defamation and insults under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection.
In this regard, Starship told several Korea news outlets, “We welcome the results of the thorough investigation and prosecution of defamation crimes that occur indiscriminately on the cyber, and we look forward to corresponding punishment and action in future court rulings.”
From October 2021 to June last year, YouTuber A is accused of defaming seven celebrities, including Jang Wonyoung, by posting videos slandering them 23 times on her personal YouTube channel ‘Taldeuk Camp’. She is also accused of uploading videos disparaging the appearance of the five to the ‘Taldeuk Camp’ 19 times.
In fact, YouTuber A produced and distributed false videos, saying, “Jang Won-young was jealous, so her fellow trainee’s debut was canceled,” and “Other celebrities also performed prostitution or plastic surgery.”
YouTuber Sojang’s profit
The prosecution analyzed the account of YouTuber A’s YouTube channel ‘Taldeok Camp’ and found that she earned 250 million won for about two years from June 2021. In particular, it was revealed that YouTuber A purchased real estate with a part of the proceeds.
The prosecution took over the cases of three victims, including Jang Wonyoung, from the police in December last year and conducted a supplementary investigation, and received complaints from five more victims last month. In February and April, two requests were made for arrest warrants for YouTuber A, but the court rejected them, saying, “There is no fear of running away.”
During the prosecution’s investigation, YouTuber A reportedly claimed, “The YouTube video is merely an expression of opinion. The video was produced for the public interest.” On the other hand, a prosecution official said, “The man ran a YouTube channel anonymously but attempted to destroy evidence by deleting the channel. While searching for the house, he found additional videos made up of celebrities on laptops used for video editing.”

The result of the lawsuit?
Jang Wonyoung and Starship won a partial victory in a 100 million won damages suit filed against YouTuber A after being sentenced by the court in January without pleading. At the time, the court ordered YouTuber A to “pay the money calculated at each rate of 12% per year until the date of full payment,” and said they should pay not only interest but also the cost of entering the court during the lawsuit.
However, she filed an appeal against the results of the sentence through her legal representative, applied for a suspension of compulsory execution of the lawsuit, and is taking measures to avoid compensation for damages by offering a 100 million won deposit.
