ZEROBASEONE Sung Hanbin Issues Second Apology Over Controversial “Moaning Sound” Comment
“No Malicious Intent” — But He Acknowledges Lack of Awareness
ZEROBASEONE member Sung Hanbin has publicly issued a second formal apology after coming under fire for making a suggestive noise during a recent YouTube appearance, with many accusing him of mimicking inappropriate sounds. The controversy stems from the September 6 episode of the YouTube variety program Ggondaehee, where Sung appeared alongside fellow member Seok Matthew.
During the broadcast, Seok commented on Sung’s habit of making peculiar noises when the car hits a speed bump. Hesitant at first, Sung eventually imitated the sound—uttering “Euut” and “Yami”. The clip quickly went viral, with numerous viewers criticizing the sounds as resembling female moans and calling them unnecessarily sexual.
Initial Casual Response, Followed by a Formal Written Apology
In response to growing backlash, Sung first attempted to defuse the situation by posting a brief, casual message on ZEROBASEONE’s fan communication platform. He stated:
“There was no bad intention. I just wanted to be funny and make the moment entertaining. If any ZEROSE (fandom) members felt uncomfortable, I truly apologize. I’ll work on how I express myself.”
However, as public criticism intensified and trended on multiple platforms, Sung returned with a formal, written apology, taking full responsibility.
“I sincerely apologize for the discomfort caused by my careless words and behavior during the Ggondaeheevideo released on September 6,” he wrote.
“It took me some time to reflect on my actions before addressing the issue. I’ve realized how much more cautious I need to be with both my words and behavior moving forward.”
He added that although there was no malicious intent, he now recognizes that “ignorance can hurt just as deeply,” and emphasized his regret and shame over the situation.
“This Will Be a Turning Point for Growth”
Sung Hanbin continued by directly addressing fans:
“To ZEROSE and everyone who felt uncomfortable because of my lack of awareness, I deeply apologize. I will take this incident as an opportunity to grow, and I promise to move forward with greater responsibility and maturity.”
“I’ll make sincere efforts to learn and improve, and I hope to show a better version of myself through my actions.”
The apology came shortly after ZEROBASEONE made their highly anticipated comeback with their first full-length album ‘NEVER SAY NEVER’ on September 1.
Context and Public Reaction
Sung hanbin’s comments sparked a wave of criticism, especially as some fans viewed the moment as undermining the group’s image. While others acknowledged his nervousness and lack of awareness, the general consensus demanded more accountability. His formal statement has been met with a mix of continued concern and cautious forgiveness, with many fans noting the importance of intent versus impact.
ZEROBASEONE’s agency has not released a separate statement, but Sung Hanbin’s public response has been framed as part of his own reflection and responsibility.
